Literature Text

He always knew that after what conspired between the two of you, there was a small chance for you to find someone else to replace him as the object of your affections. He was able to convince himself that this was for the best, not just for his safety, but for yours as well.

After all, he’s a soldier and he’s seen the destructive force of love when intertwined on the battlefield.

He just didn’t want the same to happen to you.

He didn’t want you to lose him.

He didn’t want to lose you.

So his answer to you that day was:

“No.”

It hurt to see your face cringe the way it did when you heard his answer, and it hurt even more when you walked out his door. But he did nothing to stop you because this was his resolve; this was his promise to you. He wanted to be able to secure your safety. He’d rather live knowing that you hated him than find your dead corpse hanging off the branch of a tree or, worse yet, in the jaws of a Titan. He’d rather watch you fall in love with someone else than to see you die. And maybe, just maybe, when this hell was over, he'd return your affections. All he asked was that you wait for him until then.

But...he never thought that you could forget about him so soon.

It hurt, watching your love for him fade.

It hurt, watching that love being given to someone else.

He never did catch the boy’s name, but he does recall how the same cadet used to always follow you around during your trainee days. Back then, you didn’t return any of this boy’s affections. You simply laughed them away, but this time, it’s different. Your laughter, once nothing more than jovial teasing for this boy now held love and adoration. The sound that was once reserved for him and only him was now being given to another.

And it didn’t end at that.

You didn’t smile at him anymore; hell, you barely even looked at him nowadays. All he ever saw of you was your back, and no matter how many times he wanted to reach out to you, his promise to you would hold him back.

But now, watching you walk up that aisle makes his heart pull inside. It’s not a feeling of bliss and euphoria as it should have been, but of regret and sorrow. Instead of being the one holding out his arms for you to walk into, he has to watch as you approach the waiting arms of another man, who has a look of pure elation on his face. Levi feels his heart tear when you return the same look, but his face remains the same as always: Emotionless.

His facial expression doesn’t even change when he hears the “I do” come out of your mouth. He closes his eyes just before your new husband’s lips touch yours and turns his back when the crowd bursts into cheers and applauds.

He misses the way your eyes watch him.
"And she could only hope she made the right decision." Is how the story should end, haha~ I don't know. I'm leaving this up to reader interpretation, so feel free to make your own ending!
